While many people may have negative conceptions of plastic surgery, a blepharoplasty is one procedure that has the potential to make a real difference in patients’ lives, especially because  it can sometimes be medically necessary. But what exactly is it? Don’t be intimidated by the complex name; a blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to correct droopy eyelids by removing excess skin, muscle, and fat.

What is the procedure?

A blepharoplasty aims to correct saggy or droopy eyelids, which can clear obstructed vision or improve patients’ appearance. The procedure can be performed on both upper and lower eyelids. It involves incisions being made in the eyelid that allow the surgeon to remove excess materials. The incision is then closed, leaving a minimal scar once it has healed.

Why would one need a blepharoplasty?

There are many reasons why one might undergo a blepharoplasty, as the procedure can be advantageous for both medical and cosmetic reasons. It can improve vision, as saggy eyelids have the potential to narrow one’s field of sight. It can also make patients appear more awake and youthful.

Who should consider a blepharoplasty?

The most common candidates for a blepharoplasty are those who experience droopy eyelids, bags under the eyes, or excess skin on the eyelids. However, the procedure might not be right for everyone with these symptoms. It is important to consult with a surgeon and see if the operation could have a positive impact in your life.
