Tips to Make Your Adjustment Period Easier

Typically, the adjustment period that occurs with new contact lenses lasts about 12 days. Following these tips can help make your adjustment period go smoothly!

  1. Practice Makes Perfect. Take some time when you first get your lenses to practice inserting and removing them. This will help you to get used to the process and avoid wearing them incorrectly.
  2. Keep it Clean. Make sure to wash your hands thoroughly before touching your lenses. You will also want to take good care of the lenses themselves. Try not to touch your eyes too much, even when the lenses still feel uncomfortable.
  3. Follow the Instructions. Be sure to adhere to the guidelines of your lenses. Don't wear them for longer than the recommended time period, and be sure to dispose of them as directed. Many common contact lens problems are caused by wearing them for too long or after the expiration date.

Everyone's experience is different, and for some folks, contact lenses just don't work. If you are experiencing a lot of discomforts that just doesn't feel right, be sure to call the office right away!

Usual and Unusual Reactions to Expect When Getting Used to Contact Lenses

After you visit your optometrist in Annandale for your contact lens exams and contact lens fittings, there will be an adjustment period as you become used to your new contact lenses. You will likely experience one or more of the following reactions while you are getting adjusted to contact lenses:

  • Eye Fatigue
  • Discomfort
  • Blurred Vision

If you experience any of the following, or any reactions worsen, be sure to notify our office right away:

  • Infection
  • Double Vision
  • Sensitivity to Light

Most times, the adjustment period just takes time, and it's not typical to experience any serious issues.

Is LASIK a Viable Alternative to Contact Lenses?

Many patients turn to a LASIK eye center as an alternative to contact lenses. LASIK surgeons are able to correct many common eye problems, thus eliminating the need for contact lenses. If you find that contact lenses are too uncomfortable, or just don't work well for you, LASIK is an option worth looking into.

This procedure eliminates the need for any type of corrective lenses, be they glasses or contacts. This option is really great for anyone who is an avid athlete or who is looking for a more permanent solution to their eye issues. For many patients, LASIK is exactly what they have been hoping for as a solution for their vision issues.

Eye care is an important part of your overall health and wellness and is not something that should be overlooked! If you are experiencing any issues with your vision, now is the time to schedule a comprehensive eye exam and don't forget to try our LASIK self-test - wearing contact lenses is riskier over the long term than having Lasik!
