LASIK FAQs

At Silk Vision & Surgical Center we receive, and encourage our patients to ask, many questions about LASIK eye surgery. We believe that patient education and transparency is crucial to ensuring a positive patient experience, and we are here to help our patients navigate the decision to get LASIK.

We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about LASIK and laser vision correction to help assist your journey to clearer vision. If you have inquiries for us that aren’t on this list, we encourage you to contact us or request an appointment.

Frequently asked questions about LASIK eye surgery:

  1. What can I expect my vision to be like after LASIK?

At our center we will do everything we can to ensure you have a great come and seeing as well as possible. 98% of our patients achieve 20/20 vision or better which is far above the national average.

  1. Does LASIK correct astigmatism?

Absolutely. Astigmatism is when the shape of the cornea is slightly uneven and LASIK is a great option to help correct this.

  1. I have been told my eyes are dry and could not have LASIK. Is this correct?

Patients who have dry eyes should be treated first before undergoing LASIK. If a patient still has dryness despite undergoing treatment then we will not recommend LASIK but potentially another alternative such as Visian implantable contact lens (ICL).

  1. I was told my cornea is too thin for LASIK is this true?

In order to safely undergo LASIK the cornea (i.e. the part of your eye that we will be operating on) needs to have a certain level of thickness. This is the one of the things we check during your evaluation with us.

If your cornea is too thin for LASIK, PRK or Visian implantable contact lens may be a better option for you.

  1. What kind of laser technology does Silk Vision and Surgical Center use?

We offer all laser LASIK also know as blade less LASIK. These lasers are very precise and accurate. The lasers, like cell phones, are frequently updated and we use the most current and advanced technology on the market.

  1. How long does LASIK correction last?

LASIK eye surgery will last many years and possibly the entire life for the majority of patients. In a small percentage of patients (5-10%) they may need a LASIK re-treatment or touch up to help to return their excellent vision.

  1. Does age matter? Am I too old or too young for LASIK?

The FDA requirements are that the patient be 18 years or older for LASIK. The ideal age is over 21 years as the eye is mature and is less likely to change in shape.

Also the most common age group that undergoes LASIK are patients 40 years and older. We use a technique called monovision that helps reduce their need for glasses/contact lenses for both far away and near vision.

  1. I was told I was not a good candidate in the past, can I still get screened for LASIK?

Yes. The technology and information we have today has changed significantly from the past 5-10 year. If you were told in the past that LASIK is not for you I would recommend considering being evaluated again as technology has changed and you may be a good candidate.

  1. Are there financial options available to me at Silk Vision and Surgical Center?

Yes. We do offer payment plans through CareCredit and some of the plans are interest free.

  1. Is there pain or discomfort  during LASIK surgery?

Most patients are very comfortable during the surgery. We do place a drop of topical anesthetic to the eye to help with comfort and I carefully explain to patients how they are doing during the surgery.

The combination of the eye drop as well as the re assurance from me that they are doing well is all that is needed for our patients.
